Markings & Photographs:

Preoperatively Breast measurements and photographs are taken for assessment and comparison with the postoperative results. Incision markings are done with indelible ink markers with you in the upright position before administering the Anesthesia.

General Anaesthesia is administered, wherein you will be comfortably asleep during the surgery period. The effect of this will wear off in a few hours post-surgery.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery can be performed using 2 types of procedures.

  1. Breast Reconstruction using implants

This process involves inserting Silicone implants. This also involves tissue expansion. During the consultation, the surgeon will show you how the result will feel. Silicone implants have a natural feel to them. It is followed by tissue expansion.

  1. Breast Reconstruction using tissue or FLAP technique.

This technique uses muscle, fat, and skin from another part of the body i.e., the donor area (lower abdomen, thigh, buttocks) to reconstruct the Breast.

Most of the cases also involve reconstruction of the nipple and areola which is done by the technique of skin folding to create the shape of the nipple, which is then followed by tattooing. Most of the time creation of the Nipple and Areola complex happens at a later date.

Surgery Duration:

The complete procedure lasts for about 3 to 5 hours depending on the method and intensity of the procedure.

After surgery, you will be shifted to the Recovery Room to rest till the effect of Anaesthesia wears out. Antibiotics to prevent infection and Painkillers to alleviate pain are given.

Sutures and Scars:

The surgeon will be using dissolvable sutures to close the incision, leaving a small scar that will fade over a period. If using the Flap technique, then there will be some scarring in the donor area too.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery is a major surgery and requires you to be admitted to the hospital. You will be admitted for approximately 3 days if the implant procedure is done. If the Flap technique is used, then you will be discharged after 5 to 7 days.

Before you are discharged, the surgeon will explain in detail the care that needs to be taken for quick healing. They will also explain a few restrictions you have to follow for the following weeks.

Post-surgery, you are advised to get at least 5 days of complete rest. Antibiotics and painkillers are prescribed for the next 10 day period. These medications have to be taken for the complete course to avoid any infection.

It takes around a week to 10 days for complete healing, post which you can return to your normal routine. However, you should not indulge in any kind of heavy lifting or stretching for 8 weeks as it could damage the implants as well as prevent the sutures from healing completely without any damage to the visible skin. After 8-10 weeks, you can go back to complete normalcy, including sports activities and exercising.

You are required to come for scheduled follow-ups with your surgeon to check the healing of the sutures, change of dressing, any bleeding from the sutures, to address any other unexpected discomfort. All care is to be followed as advised by your surgeon.

During the follow-up visits, the doctor will assess the recovery and will accordingly advise when you have to keep wearing the elastic bandage or support bra.

One of the common post-surgery effects seen is the burning sensation, swelling, and pain in the Breast area, especially where the incision is made. Painkillers are prescribed to deal with this. Acute pain may be experienced sometimes, which will subside over 5 days.

Also, in some cases, though the sutures are self-dissolving, remnants are seen after a few days which can cause discomfort. When you come for a follow-up, the surgeon will physically remove these.

There may be more scarring in a few cases than usual due to the skin type and scar hypertrophy. You may also have dry or tender Breast skin. For this, a cream or silicone gel sheet is prescribed, which must be applied for a few months to minimize scarring. There are chances of keloid formation too.

If you increase your activity level much before you get permission from the surgeon, you may bleed into the pockets around the breast implants. This will be checked by the doctors during your follow-up checks.

In rare cases, wherein Breast reconstruction was done with the Flap technique, there can be complete or partial loss of the flap requiring surgery redo.

Infection of Silicon implants, wound healing problems are other noted complications.
